An EU consultation requests input on how to reduce deforestation and forest degradation. Here’s an idea: how about stopping renewable energy subsidies that support logging forests for fuel?
The EU’s treatment of burning forest biomass as “zero carbon” is scientifically indefensible. Yet EU taxpayers are still paying over €6.5 billion every year in bioenergy subsidies that drive forest destruction and even human rights abuses in the USA, Canada & Brazil. The single best thing the EU can do stop forest destruction is to stop subsidizing it.
